Published lines and the English serjeants

Armies in Chronicles: Medieval are built from three lines: Levy, Household, and Mercenary, plus the named English household serjeants that show how a promotion step works. Levy recruits at tier 1 and can be promoted up to tier 5. Settlement size affects which of those tiers appear, the culture matches the region, and cohesion is lower than Household. Household starts at tier 4 and can reach tier 8 or 9 depending on the tree.

You raise them at castles, where barracks, stables, and the blacksmith change roles and tiers, and they keep higher cohesion, a tighter formation, and a faster answer to orders. Mercenaries start at tier 3 and end at tier 7. They are the opposite culture of the region, English mercenaries only appear abroad, they cost more, and morale moves more easily than in a household unit. The English Household Foot Serjeant is a tier 5 melee infantry troop.

Promotion to tier 6 splits into Sword Serjeant, the same job with better gear, or Bill Serjeant, heavier armour and a bill meant for cavalry. Troop power tiers as a whole run from 1 to 10, so the published line caps are not the whole ladder. Command slots start small and unlock up to 10, and the maximum troop count can rise to about double the opening value. The armies diary illustrates two levy units of 50 early, about 100 in each unit later, and eventually a thousand men if you can pay and feed them.

Recruitment and replenishment offers reset globally every in-game week. The filters under this section use the published line and the numeric tier ends, reading the household cap of 8 or 9 as 9 so a tier range can include that row. Early Access work is centred on the Army Commander; other paths can be roleplayed before their own progression exists.

Filter by line or by a tier window. Household includes the three serjeants because their line is Household. Sorting covers name, tier, line, and recruitment.
