English strength is exceptionally skilled bowmen, and English longbowmen prefer the flanks so they can see. Three cultures
France is the fearsome cavalry culture, and French heavy cavalry prefer to lead from the Vanguard. French mercenary cavalry can show up in other cultures lands. The Holy Roman Empire is tough melee infantry, and those forces favour a dense Vanguard and Middle Guard. The gameplay reveal is where the studio began showing that third culture. Mercenaries in general are the opposite culture of the region you recruit them in, they cost more, and their morale is more easily shaken than a household unit.
Their tiers run from 3 to 7, between the levy ceiling of 5 and the household reach of 8 or 9. Culture is not a coat of paint on the same roster: it decides which line you can raise at home and which line you have to hire somewhere else. Banner heraldry, covered on the titles page, then flies the highest title the commander holds, so a French or imperial host can read differently before the first arrow lands.
